From Heat to Week Six

Welcoming new life into the world is a remarkable journey, and experiencing it with our dog has been exciting and heartwarming. While we’re not at the finish line just yet, here’s a glimpse into the path we’ve taken so far—from her first signs of heat to preparing for her big day as we approach week seven of her pregnancy.

The Beginning: Recognizing the Heat Cycle

The journey began when we noticed Autumn entering her heat cycle in November 2024. This phase, lasting about 2–3 weeks, was marked by subtle signs like swelling, spotting, and a shift in her behavior. It was crucial to monitor her closely during this fertile window, as it set the stage for what would come.

Pregnancy Confirmation

A few weeks after mating, we took her to the vet for a check-up. Around Christmas time, we confirmed her pregnancy with an ultrasound, a moment filled with joy and excitement. Seeing those tiny embryos on the screen was magical! The vet provided guidance on her dietary needs, emphasizing the importance of proper nutrition to support her growing puppies.

Creating the Perfect Space

As her belly started to grow, we began preparing a special area for her—a quiet, cozy whelping spot where she could rest and eventually deliver. We chose a familiar corner of our home, next to her favorite window, outfitting it with soft bedding, easy-to-clean materials, and enough room for her comfort. This nesting space is already becoming her go-to retreat.

Reaching Week Six: Watching Her Bloom

At six weeks, the changes in her are more evident than ever. Her energy levels have slowed, her appetite has increased, and her belly is unmistakable. With just three weeks to go, we’ve adjusted her diet to include small, frequent meals rich in nutrients and started reducing strenuous activities to keep her comfortable.

Preparing for Labor

While we’re not quite there yet, we are preparing for the big day. We’ve learned to look for key signs of labor, like nesting behaviors, restlessness, and a drop in body temperature. Our whelping kit is nearly complete, with essentials like clean towels, gloves, a heating pad, and a lot of love to offer her as she transitions into motherhood.

The Journey Continues

Though the arrival of her puppies is still a few weeks away, this journey has already been incredibly rewarding. Witnessing her transformation and being part of her care has deepened our bond in ways we couldn’t have imagined. We eagerly count down the days to meet the little ones while cherishing every moment with Autumn as she prepares to welcome them.
